No one really remembers now the day the village was established on this very spot – memories of those who erected the first hut in this lowland, surrounded by the high wall of fir-tree forest, sank deep into the every-day routine of generations that followed. It’s known though, that the building traditionally functioning as a church, was already here back then, standing at the edge of the soaring forest with trees creeping up and trying to touch it’s rough stone walls, darkened with time, with their spiky branches. It always seemed quite different from huts built nearby – it’s very form, narrow and tall, stretches up towards the sky in contrast to squatty houses. Solid walls with small window holes high above secure the guts and let in just beams of light. Blackened wood of the massive double doors doesn’t look like the one used by villagers – ridden with multitude of deep cracks, it has evaded rot and decay, despite it’s age. Frontal side of the building is crowned with a wooden bell tower – apparently, a relatively recent addition – topped with a cross, symbol of the faith spread throughout the village.
Here’s the very first concept art made for the village done by wonderful russian artist Valeriy Zrazhevskiy (he also did a topdown painting of the village for this website). It doesn’t really match the current landscape idea, but still is amazing and very atmospheric painting by itself. Added to the gallery.
This blog is dedicated to the production process of the 3d animated short movie ‘Relicts’ (couldn’t make myself write a description like that in the Home page).
It’s a grim story about a girl living in a small village isolated amidst cold snowy woods. Soon she will find out that something totally wrong has happened to the settlement and her fellow villagers, and will have to face the forces behind that event… Her path will be dark, gruesome at times, but for now she just sits inside her tiny hut, knits for the baby she expects, and waits for the next phase of production.
The project is independently produced for a couple of years now, though for quite some time it was really scratching the head, trying this and that and generally thinking over what’s worth spending time on. At this point, it’s is in the stage of concept design, storyboarding and early assets preparation. Some of the results are available in the Gallery and Downloads sections. As the project evolves, I’ll try to shed some light on the details here, share tools and techniques. Feel free to say whatever you’re up to say and whenever you’re up to say it.
In this first post, besides introducing the project itself, I want to thank amazing artists I had a pleasure of meeting by now. I’m eager for further collaboration with them as well as the new ones :)
